Water LDC Unit
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Surface Tension | Skin formed at the top layer of water due to its attraction to itself |
| Capillary Action | Ability of water to flow in narrow tubes upwards against gravity |
| Condensation | Process of turning from a vapor or gas to liquid |
| Evaporation | Process of turning from a liquid to a vapor or a gas |
| Freezing | Process of turning a liquid to a solid |
| Melting | Process of turning a solid to a liquid |
| Refraction | Bending of light and separating it into its separate colors as it passes through water |
| Dew | Condensation of water from a gas or vapor to a liquid on a cold surface |
| Frost | Deposition of water from a gas or vapor to a solid on a substance below the temperature of freezing |
| Condensation Nuclei | solid particles in the atmosphere that provide a surface for rain drops or snow flakes to grow |
| Adhesion | Attractive force of water to stick to other types of molecules |
| Cohesion | Attractive force of water to stick to other water molecules |
| Polar Molecule | Compounds which have positive and negative regions |
| Hydrogen Bond | Weak bond between the positive hydrogen region of a water molecule to the negative oxygen region of another |
| Covalent Bond | Strong bond between atoms due to the sharing of electrons |
| Universal Solvent | Water's ability to dissolve more substances than any other compound |
| Boiling Point | The temperature at which water's vapor pressure is more than atmospheric pressure |
| Atmospheric Pressure | The pressure of the atmosphere against all surfaces on Earth |
| Vapor Pressure | The surface pressure of liquid water where it attempts to escape as a gas |
