TermDefinition
What is mass? Mass is a property of a physical object that quantifies the amount of matter it contains
What is weight? the weight of an object is the force acting on the object due to gravity
What is force? A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object's interaction with another object
What is a net force? is the combined effect (the sum) of the real forces acting on the object
What is speed? Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast an object is moving or speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance
What does proportional mean? is a relationship between two quantities where they increase or decrease at the same rate
What is velocity? is the rate at which the position changes
What is acceleration? rate at which velocity changes with time, in terms of both speed and direction
What is kinetic energy? is a form of energy that an object or a particle has by reason of its motion
What is potential energy? the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position relative to others, stresses within itself, electric charge, and other factors
What is a revolution? is the name given to a period of drastic change in scientific thought that took place during the 16th and 17th centuries
How does seasons occur? Earth is tilted on its axis relative to the orbital plane, the invisible, flat disc where most objects in the solar system orbit the sun.
What is an orbit? is a regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another one. the orbit is called a satellite
What is rotation? describes the circular motion of an object around its center
What is waxing? is any phase of the moon during the lunar cycle between the new moon and the full moon
What is waning? when it is in the phase in which its visible surface area is getting smaller
What causes the moon to change shape throughout the month? The Moon does not make its own light, like the Sun. Instead, it reflects light from the Sun back to us on Earth. The amount of reflected sunlight we see changes as the Moon moves. This is why the Moon seems to change shape.
When it is summer here, what is the season in Australia? are at opposite times to those in the northern hemisphere. December to February is summer; March to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and September to November is spring.
How much of the moon is lit at any time? 50% of the lunar surface is always illuminated by Sun
How long does each phase of the moon last? about 3 days
How long does it take the moon to go from new moon phase to new moon phase? 29.5 days
What is an astronomical unit? a unit of length effectively equal to the average, or mean, distance between Earth and the Sun, defined as 149,597,870.7 km (92,955,807.3 miles).
What is a light-year? This is a measurement for vast distances, like those in space. It describes the distance light travels in a single Earth year
What is the center of our solar system? The Sun
What is at the center of our galaxy? Galactic Center of the Milky Way
What are 3 types of galaxies? elliptical, spiral, and irregular
What is a galaxy? are the fundamental units of structure in the universe where stars form
What is a comet? are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock and dust that orbit the Sun
What is an asteriod? are rocky worlds revolving around the sun that are too small to be called planets
What is a solar system? is made up of the sun and everything that orbits around it, including planets, moons, asteroids, comets and meteoroids
What is a star? any massive self-luminous celestial body of gas that shines by radiation derived from its internal energy sources
What is the name of the 2nd closest star to Earth? Proxima Centauri
Who is Edwin Hubble and what did he contribute to science? a "pioneer of the distant stars," astronomer. He played a pivotal role in deciphering the vast and complex nature of the universe. His meticulous studies of spiral nebulae proved the existence of galaxies other than our own Milky Way.
What is a Hubble Law? is the observation in physical cosmology that galaxies are moving away from the Earth at speeds proportional to their distance
What is gravity? also called gravitation, in mechanics, the universal force of attraction acting between all matter
What is a solar eclipse? occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partially obscuring Earth's view of the Sun and can only happen during a New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth
What is a lunar eclipse? occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. Although the moon is in Earth's shadow, some sunlight reaches the moon.
