Figurative Language Terms
| Term | Definition |

| simile | Uses the words like or as to compare one object to another. |
| metaphor | Compares two things does not use like or as. |
| hyperbole | An exaggeration that is so dramatic no one would believe it. |
| idiom | A phrase that says one thing and means another. |
| personification | When human characteristics are given to an animal or an object. |
| onomatopoeia | A word that imitates the sounds of a thing. |
| alliteration | The repetition of a sound at the beginning of two or more words close together. |
| simile example | He was as busy as a bee! |
| metaphor example | Her eyes were jewels, sparkling in the sun. |
| hyperbole example | I have told you to clean your room a million times! |
| onomatopoeia example | Bam ! Crash! Zoom! |
| alliteration example | She sells sea shells by the seashore. |
| idiom example | Everything is coming up roses for Sarah today. |
| personification example | The flowers danced in the wind. |
| allusion | a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing, cultural, literary, or political idea. |
| imagery | using very descriptive language |
