How are animals classified?
| Term | Definition |

| invertebrates | an animal that has no backbone |
| sponges | appear more like plants than animals, attach themselves to rocks, trap and consume tiny organisms that float in the water, has two layers of cells and a thick, jellylike layer between them |
| hydra | have hollow bodies and snakelike tentacles around the mouth to capture prey |
| mollusks | have soft bodies, some have shells for support Examples: snails, squids and oysters |
| arthropods | has a stiff outer covering Examples: lobsters, crabs, spiders, centipedes, millipedes |
| earthworms | have narrow tubelike bodies that burrow in the ground and digests the remains of dead plants and animals |
| vertebrate | an animal with a backbone |
| fish | have gills to breathe in water, lay eggs, spend their whole lives in water |
| amphibians | they start their lives in water but then develop lungs so they can breath on land examples: frogs,salamanders |
| reptiles | lay eggs, have lungs all their lives and tough scales that protect its body |
| mammals | have hair or fur that keeps it warm, have lungs and feed their young with milk Examples: dogs, bears, horses, cows, whales |
