How are living things classified?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| classify | to arrange in groups using a system |
| kingdom | the largest group into which an organism is classified |
| How scientists classify organisms | by similarity, cell structure, how they get nutrients and energy, how they reproduce |
| Moneran | one-celled, no separate nucleus Example: Bacteria |
| Protist | Mostly one-celled but some have many cells, have nucleus and other cell structures Examples: Algae, ameba |
| Fungus | Mostly many-celled, cannot move, absorb nutrients from other organisms Examples: Mushrooms, yeast, molds |
| Plant | Many-celled, cannot move, use energy from the sun to make sugars (food) Examples: Trees, flowers, ferns |
| Animal | Many-celled, most can move, get energy by consuming other organisms Examples: Invertebrates, fish, birds, mammals |
| genus | a group of similar species Example: Lions and tigers |
| species | group of organisms of only one kind that can interbreed in nature Example: Tigers |
| vertebrates | have a backbone |
| invertebrates | no backbones |
