Skeletal System

Skeletal System Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Skeleton Your inner framework, made up of all the bones in your body
Vertebrae 26 small bones that make up your backbone
Joint A place in the body where two bones come together
Ligament Strong connective tissue that connects bone to bone
Cartilage A type of connective tissue that is found at the ends of bones and keeps them from rubbing together
Compact Bone The hard external layer of bones
Spongy Bone This structure makes bone tissue light weight but strong
Marrow A soft connective tissue
Osteoporosis A condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily
Hinge Joint Allows forward or backward motion. Examples are your knee and elbow
Pivot Joint Allows one bone to rotate around another. Your neck allows you to turn your head from side to side
Gliding Joint Allows one bone to slide over another. They are found in your wrist and ankle
Ball-and-Socket Joint Allow for the greatest range of motion. Located in your hip and shoulder.
