Skeletal System Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Skeleton | Your inner framework, made up of all the bones in your body |
| Vertebrae | 26 small bones that make up your backbone |
| Joint | A place in the body where two bones come together |
| Ligament | Strong connective tissue that connects bone to bone |
| Cartilage | A type of connective tissue that is found at the ends of bones and keeps them from rubbing together |
| Compact Bone | The hard external layer of bones |
| Spongy Bone | This structure makes bone tissue light weight but strong |
| Marrow | A soft connective tissue |
| Osteoporosis | A condition in which the body's bones become weak and break easily |
| Hinge Joint | Allows forward or backward motion. Examples are your knee and elbow |
| Pivot Joint | Allows one bone to rotate around another. Your neck allows you to turn your head from side to side |
| Gliding Joint | Allows one bone to slide over another. They are found in your wrist and ankle |
| Ball-and-Socket Joint | Allow for the greatest range of motion. Located in your hip and shoulder. |
