QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 main regions of the brain? 1. Hindbrain 2. Midbrain 3. Forebrain
What is sensory transduction? conversion of a stimulus signal to an neuronal signal by a sensory receptor cell
What are the hindbrain subdivisions? Medulla Oblongata, cerebellum, and pons
What is the primary receptor type of the hindbrain? Interoceptors
What type of receptors are found in the eyes? Photoreceptors
What is the function of the cochlea? distinguishes differences in pressure waves and converts them into nerve impulses
What is the parietal lobe responsible for? ability to read, our sense of navigation, and our response to touch and pain
What is the temporal lobe responsible for? receiving and processing neuron signals generated by mechanoreceptors in the ears
What is the occipital lobe responsible for? interprets the nerve signals from the optic nerve and represents them in our conscious experience
What is the cerebral cortex? highly folded surface of the forebrain (”gray matter”) where the processing of information occurs.
What are the frontal lobes responsible for? taking actions, interpreting emotions, building memory, and future planning
What is the Computational Theory of Mind? the human mind is an information processing system and consciousness arises from the integration of neural computation across the brain.
What is neural plasticity? brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life
What is the Broca's area and where in the brain is located? located in the frontal lobe and associated with speech generation
What receptor allows us to feel things like touch, temperature, and pressure? Mechanoreceptors/Nociceptors
What is the corpus callosum? a large collection of neurons that connect the left and right hemispheres of the forebrain
What are the association areas? Occipital lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and the frontal lobe
What is the main conduit that most sensory signals come into and leave the brain? Spinal Cord
Which of the four association areas is the last to develop? frontal lobes
What is the somatic division of the brain responsible for? voluntary control of skeletal muscles
What is the autonomic division of the brain responsible for? involuntary, “automatic” control of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and glands

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
