| producers | living things that make their own energy during photosynthesis (any kind of green plant) |
| consumers | living things that must eat in order to get energy (animals) |
| decomposers | living things that break down dead plants, and animals for energy (such as bacteria, fungi, some insects, and snails) |
| omnivores | living things that eat plants and animals (such as: humans, skunks, pigs, lizards, turtles, most bears) |
| carnivores | living things that eat only other animals (such as: lions, tigers, snakes, sharks, spiders) |
| herbivores | living things that eat only plants (such as: sheep, cow, and deer) |
| organism | any living thing |
| abiotic factors | nonliving components of environment necessary for survival (such as rocks, sunlight, fresh or saltwater) |
| community | a group of interdependent organisms inhabiting the same region and interacting with each other. |
| ecosystem | a system formed by interaction of a community of organisms with their physical environment |
| population | a group of organisms of the same species populating a given area |
| habitat | the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism |
| food chain | a series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten |
| food web | a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains |
| predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| prey | an animal that is hunted, killed, and eaten by another animal |
