petrified fossil tissue parts of plant and animal are replaced with minerals from water to make it rocklike
amber fossil small organisms become trapped in tree sap and over time the sap hardens
cast fossil a SOLID copy of the shape of an organism, hint: jello
trace fossil A type of fossil that provides evidence of the activities of ancient organisms, example footprints, poop, or nest
tar pit fossil seepage of natural tar or asphalt, especially an accumulation that has acted as a natural trap into which animals have fallen and sunk and had their bones preserved.
frozen ice fossil When an organism becomes trapped in some way, dies, and then is quickly frozen
carbon film fossil fossil formed from an extremely thin coating of carbon on a rock
mold fossil a hollow area in sediment in the shape of an organism or part of an organism, hint: container where you put the jello
extinct an organism that is no longer in existence on Earth; occurs when a species cannot adapt to environmental changes
Paleontologist A scientist who studies fossils to learn about organisms that lived long ago
index fossil fossils of widely distributed organisms that lived during only one short period
fossil record the complete body of fossils that shows how species and ecosystems change over time
fossil evidence of past life that is preserved in rock
igneous rock rock that forms when magma or lava cools & solidifies
metamorphic rock rock that has been changed by extreme heat and pressure
sedimentary rock rock that forms when particles (sediment) from other rocks form layers, become cemented together
trilobite A crablike invertebrate that is an INDEX FOSSIL of the Cambrian Period
