estivation animals that enter a deep sleeplike period of dormancy when conditions are dry
coniferous evergreen trees that produce seed- bearing cones
hibernation deep, sleeplike state that animals enter for most of the winter
permafrost cold climates where the underground soil remains frozen year-round
salinity amount of salt dissolved in water
photic zone uppermost aquatic layer where there is enough sunlight for photosynthesis
aphotic zone no sunlight penetrates and photosynthesis cannot occur
benthic zone the bottom of a body of water
littoral zone shallow near-shore portion of the photic zone
limnetic zone zone farthest from the shore where there are no rooted plants
wetland area of land that are flooded with water at least part of the year
flood plain area nearest a river's course that can be flooded periodically
estuary body of water partly enclosed by land where freshwater meets salt water
upwelling vertical flow of cold, nutrient-rich water towards the surface
