Forces Notes

TermDefinition
force a push or a pull
all forces have a size and direction
net force the combination of all the forces acting on an object
when the forces are in the same direction add the forces
when forces are in opposing directions subtract the smaller force from the larger one
the net force will be in the direction of the larger force
inertia the tendency of all objects to resist a change in motion
mass the amount of matter in an object
acceleration the rate at which velocity changes
Newton’s First Law of Motion states: An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion states: The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object.
Newton’s Third Law of Motion states: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
force equals mass times acceleration: F=MA
