Types of shock
Term | Cause | Signs and aymptoms | Treatment |
---|---|---|---|
Cardiogenic shock | inadequate heart function Disease or injury Impaired electrical system | Chest pain, irregular weak pulse, low bp, cyanosis, cool clammy skin, anxiety, crackles/tales, pulmonary edema | position comfortable High flow o2 Assist ventilation ALS |
Obstructive shock | mechanical obstruction of the cardiac muscle 1. Tension pneumothorax 2. Cardiac tamponade 3. Pulmonary embolism | dyspnea, rapid weak pulse, rapid shallow breaths, deceased lung compliance, unilateral, decreased or absent breath sounds, deceased bp, JVD, subcutaneous emphysema, cyanosis, tracheal deviation, and Becks Triad (cardiac tamponade) | High flow o2 ALS |
Septic shock | severe bacterial infection | warm skin or fever, tachycardia, low bp | high flow o2 Assist ventilation Keep warm ALS |
Neurogenic shock | damage to cervical spine, causing widespread dilation | bradycardia Low bp Signs of neck injury | secure airway Spinal immobilization High flow p2 Preserve body heat ALS |
Anaphylactic shock | Life threatening allergic reaction | can development within seconds, mild itching or rash, burning skin, vascular dilation, generalized edema, coma, rapid death | manage airway Assist ventilation High flow o2 Epinephrine ALS |
Psychogenic shock | temporary vascular dilation, anxiety, bad news, sight of blood, severe pain, illness | rapid pulse Normal or low bp | determine duration of unconscious Position supine Record initial vitals and mental status Transport prompt |
Hypovolemic shock | loss of blood or fluid | rapid weak pulse, low bp, change in mental status, cyanosis, cool clammy skin, increased respiratory rate. | secure airway Assist ventilation High flow o2 Control external bleeding Keep warm ALS |
