Sedimentary Rocks and Fossil Fuels

sedimentary rock -is a type of rock that forms in layers as sediments are deposited, compacted and cemented together.
fossil fuels -are nonrenewable resources formed deep in the Earth from ancient organisms over millions of years
oil (petroleum) -is a flammable liquid produced from organic matter buried under layers of ocean sediment for millions of years
natural gas -is a flammable gas produced from the ancient remains of marine (ocean) organisms buried in sediment for millions of years
coal -is a flammable solid produced by ancient remains of land organisms buried under layers of sediment for millions of years
organic matter -the remains of once-living plants and animals.
inorganic matter -anything that is NOT a once-living plant or animal.
decay -to rot and breakdown into smaller parts.
pressure - the action of force by one object against another object.
compaction the squeezing together of sediment caused by layers of pressure
cementation the process of "gluing" compacted rock sediments together into a hard rock
formation - the steps taken in which something is formed.
weathering the breakdown of rocks into sediment
erosion the moving of sediment from one place to another
deposition the dropping off of sediment in a new location
