| rhythm | the beat of a poem |
| rhyme | words that have the same ending sound |
| rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhyming words usually at the end of lines in a poem |
| refrain | a word or phrase repeated in a poem |
| stanza | a group of lines that form a unit of a poem (like paragraphs) |
| free verse | a poem without a specific pattern or structure |
| line | the smallest unit of a poem (like sentences) |
| line breaks | where the poet chooses to end one line and start a new one; usually to emphasize something |
| form | the structure or organization of a written work |
| simile | comparison of two things using like, as, or than |
| hyperbole | over exaggeration |
| alliteration | repetition of the beginning sounds of words |
| metaphor | comparison of two things by suggesting one thing IS another thing |
| personification | giving human characteristics to non-human things |
| onomatopoeia | sound words |
| idiom | a well-known phrase that means something different than the actual meaning of the individual words |
