Terms
| Innate | something we are naturally born with/ works on many different |
| Adaptive | something we have learned/ works on only one |
| Innate immunity line of defenses | 1st and 2nd lines |
| Adaptive immunity line of defense | 3rd line |
| Antimicrobial peptides | small peptide fragments that can kill bacteria by making pores in cell membranes |
| Peristalsis | moves "things" so microbes cant "stick around" |
| Normal microbiota | microoganisms that normally reside on or in healthy individual (ex: urogenital tract - lactobacillus species) |
| Types of cells in blood | erythrocytes, thrombocytes & leukocytes |
| 2ns line defense cells | neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages & dendritic cells |
| Vasodilation | widens blood vessels which increases blood flow |
| 5 signs of inflammation | redness, heat, pain, loss of function & swelling |
| Diapedesis | phagocytes squeeze between endothelial cells |
| Margination | getting phagocytes to stop and stick to the inner lining of the blood vessel walls |
| important antimicrobial substance associated with secondary host defenses? | complement system (complements immune cells in destroying pathogens) |
| where complement proteins found? | circulating in blood |
| how is complement system activated? | occurs through antibody-antigen reactions or the presence of a pathogen |
| how can complement system destroy invading microbes? | 1. enhancing phagocytosis 2. initiating inflammation 3. promoting cytolysis |
| what can a lymphocyte stem cell become? | can become either a B cell or T cell |
| B cell differentiate where? & T cell too? | B = bone marrow, T = thymus |
| Where do B and T cell migrate to? | Spleen and lymph nodes |
| role of lymphatic system? | transport lymphocytes to "filter system" against invading pathogens |
| what is an epitope? | a LARGE antigen that has many smaller, exposed regions antigen-binding sites of antibody are SPECIFIC only bind to particular epitope |
| why are B cell antigen presenting cells? What else is also considered a antigen presenting cell? | B cells present foreign antigen fragments on their surface A macrophage. |
| What can activated B cell become? | a plasma B cell or memory B cell Plasma B cell capable of secreting antibodies |
| Natural active immunity | getting sick and getting better |
| Natural passive immunity | from mom before and after birth |
| Artificial active immunity | EX: vaccination |
| Artificial passive immunity | EX: infusion/immunotherapy |
