Organism Any living thing
Producer An organism that can make its own food & uses sunlight to make it's own energy.
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms
Decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms to obtain energy
Food chain A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food web A community of organisms where there are several food chains connected
Herbivore (Primary Consumer) An organism that eats only plants
Carnivore (Secondary/Tertiary Consumer) organism that obtains energy by eating animals
Omnivore A consumer that eats both plants and animals
Predator An animal that hunts other animals for food
Prey An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
Mutualism A relationship between two species in which both species benefit
Parasitism A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed
Predation Interactions between organisms where one captures and consumes another.
Commensalism A relationship between two organisms in which one benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed
Competition a relationship between two organisms or species that strive for the same limited resources
Deforestation removal of trees to make room for something besides forest.
Urbanization population shift from rural to urban areas, the decrease in the proportion of people living in rural areas, and the ways in which societies adapt to this change
Desertification the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
Atom The smallest unit that makes up all matter.
Subatomic particles Particles that make up an atom and include: protons, neutrons, & electrons
Protons Positively charged particle located in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutrons Neutral (NO CHARGE) particles that are located in the nucleus of an atom.
Electrons Negatively charged particles that surround the nucleus of an atom.
Nucleus The positively charged center of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass.
Electron Cloud Where electrons are located around the nucleus of an atom.
Solid A state of matter where the molecules are packed tightly and vibrate back and forth with a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid A state of matter where the molecules can flow past each other.
Gas A state of matter where the molecules are free to move in all directions at high speeds.
