Unit 3 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
air the part of the atmosphere closest to Earth; the part of the atmosphere that organisms on Earth use for respiration
amber a fossil resin from tree sap, usually a translucent, yellow-brown color, which may contain insects or other organisms
asteroid a small object made of rock or metal that orbits the sun
atmosphere the layers of gases that surround a planet
bacteria single-celled organisms without an organized nucleus (related term: bacterium, prokaryote)
carbon an element that is found in almost all compounds that make up living things
cast a type of fossil formed when sediment fills a mold of an organic object such as a fossil shell, creating a replica of that object made of sediment
decay to break down or wear away
DNA found in the nucleus of a cell, a long nucleic acid molecule containing the genetic instructions for the development and functioning of all living organisms; abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid
dwarf planet a body in space that orbits the sun; similar to a small planet but without the proper mass
