rock types
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Earth’s Evolution | Originally, Earth was partly molten, allowing dense metals to sink to the core and less dense separated into layers |
| Mineral composition | The unique combination of solid elements and compounds that make up a mineral |
| Rock Cycle | Earth’s rocks change from one type to another over time due to various Earth’s processes |
| Igneous rock | Formed when lava or magma cools and solidfies lava cools quickly magma cools |
| Lava | Motern rock or magma that has reached the earths rapid cooling with small crystals |
| magma | Melted or molten rock material under the earths surface cools slowly with larger crystals |
| Metamorphic rock | Formed deep underground where heat and preasure cause existing rocks to be changed |
| Heat and pressure | Changing variables due to the weight of rocks forming metamorphic rock |
| Sedimentary rock | Rocks form when particales of other rocks are depoited in layers and are compacted and cemennted together |
| Copaction | Occurs when rock particals are pressed together or packed down by gravity and overlaying rocks |
| Cementation | Occurs when compacted sediments stick together and turn into rock |
