rock types

TermDefinition
Earth’s Evolution Originally, Earth was partly molten, allowing dense metals to sink to the core and less dense separated into layers
Mineral composition The unique combination of solid elements and compounds that make up a mineral
Rock Cycle Earth’s rocks change from one type to another over time due to various Earth’s processes
Igneous rock Formed when lava or magma cools and solidfies lava cools quickly magma cools
Lava Motern rock or magma that has reached the earths rapid cooling with small crystals
magma Melted or molten rock material under the earths surface cools slowly with larger crystals
Metamorphic rock Formed deep underground where heat and preasure cause existing rocks to be changed
Heat and pressure Changing variables due to the weight of rocks forming metamorphic rock
Sedimentary rock Rocks form when particales of other rocks are depoited in layers and are compacted and cemennted together
Copaction Occurs when rock particals are pressed together or packed down by gravity and overlaying rocks
Cementation Occurs when compacted sediments stick together and turn into rock
