Nonrenewable Resources

| natural resources | things that people use that come from the environment |
| nonrenewable energy | sources of energy that can't be easily replenished easily; also called non-renewable resources |
| fossil fuels | the preserved remains of organisms that lived long ago and changed into oil, coal, and natural gas |
| coal | a solid fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of swamp plants that have been under extreme pressure for many years |
| oil | a liquid fossil fuel that can be burned for energy; It is often used to make gasoline and plastics. |
| natural gas | a gas fossil fuel that can be burned for energy; It is often used to heat our homes and stoves |
| generator | a device that produces electricity from motion |
| anthracite coal | the hardest form of coal that contains the greatest amount of carbon; It produces the greatest amount of heat and is used mainly for heating homes |
| mining | the process of taking materials out of the ground |
