Unit 3 Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Kinetic energy | Energy possessed by an object because of its motion. Energy is the ability to do work. |
| System | The components we are focusing on; the components we include on our energy graphs. |
| Energy Transfer | The conversion of one type of energy to another, or the movement of energy from one place to another. |
| Potential energy | Stored energy that could be used to do work. |
| Thermal energy | Heat energy; an example of thermal energy is kinetic energy. |
| Law of conservation of energy | Energy can not be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred or converted from one form to another. |
| Gravitational potential energy | Energy stored due to height. |
| Elastic/Spring potential energy | energy stored due to elasticity(ability to bounce back) |
| Magnetic potential energy | Energy stored in a magnetic field. |
| Electric potential energy | Energy stored in an electric field. |
| Stable | When an object is closest to its resting state and has the lowest amount of potential energy. |
