Fiction Vocabulary

TermDefinition
message the lesson or moral of the story, usually a short phrase (ex. work first play later, face your fears, never give up hope)
theme what the author wants you to learn or know from the story, the big idea of the story, the larger message the author is trying to make known, usually one word (ex. courage, justice, friendship)
character the person or animal the story is about....they can be main who are the center of the story and supporting who have a small part in the story
climax the turning point of the story where something important happens, most of the time this is the height of the problem
conflict a problem or difference in ideas, wishes, or needs....can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, or man vs. self
cultural setting the “where” and “when” for the story—the time and place, but includes beliefs, customs, values, and practices of a particular group of people
falling action the events that end or wrap up the story
historical setting the "where" and "when" for the story is in a particular time in history, and usually use the historical events as part of the plot,
plot the events that make up the main part of the story, what happens
relationship the way in which two or more people or groups treat and behave toward each other, and how the people are connected
resolution the end of the story, how the problem is solved
rising action the events of a story that lead up to the problem or climax
event a thing that happens, especially one of importance
narrator the person telling the story
culture the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts, beliefs, values, and practices
