The Solar System and the Stars

TermDefinition
orbit to revolve or go around an object. "The earth orbits the sun once in 365.25 days."
rotate to spin around "The earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours."
geocentric model A model of the solar system that places the earth in the center. This is wrong.
heliocentric model A model of the solar system that places the sun in the center. this is true.
sol Another name for sun.
core the hottest part of the sun
hydrogen a gas in a star that burns up and turns into helium.
luminous The more LUMINOUS a star is, the brighter it glows.
Betelgeuse A red gas giant star in the constellation Orion.
constellation a group of stars that form recognizable patterns. Orion and Ursa Major or constellations.
star a burning ball of gas held together by gravity
habitable zone an area around a star that is the right temperature to have liquid water and support life
light year a distance that tells how far light can travel in space in one year
solar flare A burst of high energy radiation made by the sun that can travel to Earth and interfere with cell phone reception and satellite communications
seasonal constellation A constellation that only appears during certain months or seasons during the year
Polaris The North Star
hemisphere half a sphere. We live in the northern hemisphere.
equator an imaginary line around the center of Earth that separates the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere
