DNA Lab and Mitosis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the three main components of the extraction solution? | water, dish soap, salt |
| What is the purpose of the dish soap? | to dissolve the nuclear membrane |
| What is the purpose of the salt | to break the DNA into smaller pieces |
| Why is alcohol added to the solution? | because DNA isn't soluble in alcohol and will float to the top |
| What is the name of the little container the DNA was put in? | extraction tube |
| What are the two main parts of the cell cycle? | interphase, mitosis |
| Interphase is what percent of the total cell cycle? | 90% |
| Mitosis is what percent of the cell cycle? | 10% |
| What three things that happen during interphase? | growth of the cell, performing cell functions, replicating DNA |
| Why is it important that the DNA is replicated? | The DNA is doubled so when the cell divides there will be the right amount of DNA in each new cell. |
| What is the name of the original cell that undergoes mitosis? | parent cell |
| What is the name of the two cells at the end of mitosis? | daughter cells |
| What is the purpose of mitosis | cell growth, cell repair, cell replacement |
| What is the acronym for the phases of mitosis? | PMAT |
| Name the four phases in order. | prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase |
| What happens during prophase | The nuclear membrane dissolves, DNA condenses to visible chromosomes, centrioles move to the poles, spindle fibers begin to torm and attach to the chromosomes |
| What happens during metaphase | The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell (the equator) |
| What happens during anaphase? | The spindle fibers condense and pull the chromosomes towards the poles. |
| What happens during telophase? | The chromosomes begin to unwind; the nuclear membrane reforms; the cell membrane begins to pinch in. |
| What happens during cytokenesis? | The cell membrane completely pinches in and divides the parent cell into two daughter cells. |
| What type of cells are made during mitosis? | daughter cells identical to the parent cell; identical body (somatic) cells |
| What is the name for DNA when it is in its long, thready state before it condenses to chromosomes? | chromatin |
| What is another name for body cells? | somatic cells |
