T2-Lesson 1 Structure & Functions of Cells

Cells 1. STRUCTURE- what it is made of; What the part are 2. FUNCTION- (Job)- obtain energy, bring in nutrients and water, get rid of waste.
Cell Theory 1. 1600's- Scientists discovered that living things are made of cells. 2. Microscope made this discovery possible. 3. New discoveries about cells lead scientists to the cell theory.
Observing Cells 1. Robert Hooke looked at cork oak trees; found "tiny rooms" and called them cells. (dead cells) 2. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek observed living cells swimming; animalcules. 3. Schleiden and Schwann- developed the cell theory.
Principles of the Cell Theory 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are basic unit of structure and function in living things. 3. All new cells are produced from living cells.
Light Microscope Focus light through lenses to produce an image.
Electron Microscope Use beams of electrons that scan the surface of a specimen.
Magnification Uses objective (4x, 10x, 40x) eyepiece (10X)
Resolution How detailed an image is; higher magnification provides greater resolution.
