Chemical Weathering Vocabulary

Chemical Weathering the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes.
Water weathers rock by dissolving it.
Oxygen Iron and other metals combines with this in the presence of water in a processes called oxidation
Rust Product of oxidation on metals
Green color Product of oxidation on copper
Carbonic acid Eats away limestone and marble
Carbon Dioxide dissolves in rain water and sinks through pockets in the soil.
Lichen Plants that grow on rocks produce weak acids that chemically weather rock.
Produces a weak acid The roots of the plants and organisms
Acid Precipitation Compounds from burning coal, oil and gas react chemically with water forming acids produces this.
