Mechanical Weathering Vocabulary

Two types of weathering Mechanical and Chemical
Process of mechanical weathering rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions or physical means!
Mechanical weathering chemical makeup Stays the same
Mechanical weathering characteristics Same as the original rock
Frost action rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions or physical means!
Ice wedging Repeated process that splits rock when water seeps into cracks, then freezes and expands, causing pieces to break off.
Abrasion the grinding away (wearing down) of rock by other rock particles (pieces) carried in water, ice, gravity or wind
Plants Roots of plants grow into cracks & widen as they grow.
Animals Animals that burrow or dig loosen & break apart rocks in the soil.
