T2-Cell Systems L2

T2-Lesson 2 Cell Structures 7th grade

Part of a cell Organelles are tiny structures that carry out of specific function within a cell. Structure (parts) Function (job)
Cell Wall 1. Found in plants 2. Found in some fungi, bacteria, and protists. 3. NOT in animal cells. 4. STRUCTURE- Rigid; made of Cellulose/chitin 5. FUNCTION- Protect and support cell
Cell Membrane 1. Found in ALL cells. 2. STRUCTURE- thin, flexible barrier 3. FUNCTION- prevents harmful material from entering the cell; controls what enters and exits the cell.
Cytoplasm 1. STRUCTURE- clear fluid made mostly of water, and some salt. 2. FUNCTION- holds all of the cells organelles; carries nutrients and proteins throughout the cell.
Nucleus 1. STRUCTURE- large, oval, contains DNA 2. FUNCTION- controls cells activities; DNA provides instructions for cell function.
Endoplasmic Reticulum and Ribosomes 1. STRUCTURE- a maze of passageways; ribosomes are small "dots" located on ER and in cytoplasm. 2. FUNCTION- processes many substances like proteins and lipids; ribosomes make proteins.
Golgi Apparatus 1. STRUCTURE- flattened sacs of tubes. 2. FUNCTION- like the warehouse; packages and distributes materials around and out of the cell.
Mitochondria 1. STRUCTURE- rod shaped 2. FUNCTION- "powerhouse" of the cell; creates energy.
Chloroplasts 1. STRUCTURE- in plants and some bacteria/protists. 2. FUNCTION- captures energy from the sun and turns into food.
Lysosomes 1. STRUCTURE- small, round organelles. 2. FUNCTION- "recycling center"; break down wastes
Vacuoles 1. STRUCTURE- water filled sac; larger in plants 2. FUNCTION- stores water, food, and other materials.
Cells working together Specialized cells- Unicellular, Multicellular, Cells have different shapes
Unicellular Cell performs all functions to sustain life; if cell dies, organism dies.
Multicellular Organisms More Complex; cells do specific jobs
Cells have different shapes nerve cell/red blood cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
