|---|---|
| Linnaean Naming system | 1. Biologist Carolus Linnaeus- arranged organisms based on observable feature. 2. Binomial Nomenclature- two part naming system made up of the organisms genus and species. |
| Taxonomy | 1. Study of how organisms are classified. 2. Scientits use taxonomy to identify the name of an unknown organism. |
| Domains | 1. Broadest level of classification. 2. Eukarya- Plant, Animal, Protist, Fungi. 3. Archea and Bacteria- unicellular organisms without nuclei. |
| Binomial Nomenclature | 1. Two part naming system 2. Consists of Genus and Species 3. The more groups that two organisms share, the more characteristics they have in common. |
| Scientific Naming | 1. Genus first and capitalized; species and lowercase. 2. Italized or underlined 3. Usually in Latin 4. Better than common name because there is only 1 scientific name. 5. Taxonomic Keys can help to identify organisms. |
| Evolution and Classification Charles Darwin- New theory of evolution | The idea that species change over time. 1. Modern species developed from ancient species through natural selection. 2. Some organisms are better adapted to their environment than others, and will be more likely to survive and reproduce. |
| Common Ancestry | 1. As evidence of evolution increased, scientist changed how they classified organisms. 2. Certain organisms may be similar because they share a common ancestor. |
| Evolutionary Relationships | 1. Scientists compare structures and DNA to learn about evolutionary history of organisms. 2. Convergent evolution- when unrelated organisms evolve similar characteristics. |
