Plant Needs

Plant Needs 5th grade

TermDefinition
plant an organism that is made up of many cells, makes its own food through photosynthesis, and cannot move; a member of kingdom Plantae
producer an organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis
photosynthesis plants use energy from sunlight to make their own food from water and carbon dioxide.
sun original source of energy for most ecosystems
plant needs for photosynthesis water, carbon dioxide (from air), and sunlight
things plants produce during photosynthesis glucose (food for the plant) and oxygen
glucose food that plants produce during photosynthesis
carbon dioxide Humans and other animals rid themselves of this by exhaling, or breathing out; plants take it in through their leaves for photosynthesis
oxygen humans and other animals breathe this in; plant release this as a waste product through photosynthesis
Chloroplast part of a plant cell where photosynthesis occurs
vessels narrow bundle of tubes within a leaf used to move water and nutrients from the roots to the leaf cells, and nutrients from leaves to the rest of the plant
roots soak up water, vitamins and minerals from the soil so that a plant has plenty of food and nutrients
stems supports the plant so that it stands upright. It has many thin tubes that carry water, minerals and food up from the roots.
leaves make food, or sugar. They also take in carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen, which is then released into the atmosphere
plant cells are like animal cells but they have a cell wall and contain chlorophyll, which gives the different parts of a plant their green color.
respiration the taking in of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide by humans or other animals
carbon cycle the natural cycling of carbon dioxide and oxygen through the atmosphere
chlorophyll substance that plants need to absorb sunlight

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
