Chemical Compounds in Cells

| Element | Any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. |
| Compound | Form when two or more elements combine chemically. |
| Carbohydrate | Energy-rich organic compounds made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. |
| Lipid | Compound that are made mostly of carbon and hydrogen and some oxygen. |
| Protein | Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases sulfur. |
| Enzyme | A group of proteins that speed up chemical reactions in living things. |
| Nucleic Acid | Very long organic molecules that consists of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. |
| DNA | Genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring. |
| Double Helix | The shape of a DNA molecule is described as a twisted ladder |
