Chemical Compounds in Cells

TermDefinition
Element Any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Compound Form when two or more elements combine chemically.
Carbohydrate Energy-rich organic compounds made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Lipid Compound that are made mostly of carbon and hydrogen and some oxygen.
Protein Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases sulfur.
Enzyme A group of proteins that speed up chemical reactions in living things.
Nucleic Acid Very long organic molecules that consists of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
DNA Genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
Double Helix The shape of a DNA molecule is described as a twisted ladder
