Chapter 6 vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| sediment | pieces of solid material that have been deposited |
| clastic | small pieces of sediments |
| deposition | when particles settle in water or sink to the bottom |
| lithification | process that change sediments into sedimentary rocks |
| cementation | mineral growth cements sediment grains together into solid rock |
| bedding | horizontal layering of rocks |
| graded bedding | largest and heaviest on bottom, small on top |
| cross bedding | inclined layers of sediments across a horizontal surface |
| erosion | removal and movement of surface material |
| weathering | set of physical and chemical processes that break rock into smaller pieces |
| clastic sedimentary rocks | rocks formed from loose sediments |
| porosity | pore space |
| evaporite | crystal grains that precipitate our of supersaturated solution |
| regional metamorphism | high pressure and temperature effect large region to for metamorphic rock |
| contact metamorphism | occurs when molten rock come into contact with solid rock to form metamorphic rock |
| hydrothermal metamorphism | very hot water reacts with rocks to form metamorphic rock |
| foliated | wavy layers or bands of minerals in metamorphic rock |
| non-foliated | lack mineral grains, blocky crystal shapes |
| porphyroblasts | new large metamorphic crystals |
| rock cycle | continuous changing of rock material from one type of rock to another. |
