Rocks & Minerals

QuestionAnswer
Which change in rocks involves melting? Rock changing to magma
When geologists have to determine relative ages of rocks, they can use... The Law of Superposition
Which layers of rock are the oldest? The rocks deeper in the Earth are older than the ones closer to the surface.
Which property of radioactive decay allows scientists to determine the absolute age of a rock? The half-life because it occurs at a set rate.
How can sedimentary rocks be a good example of the law of superposition? The rocks form in layers- In UNDISTURBED layers the oldest rock is at the bottom with the youngest rocks on top.
What happens to isotopes during radioactive decay? An unstable isotope can break down and when this happens, it forms into a more stable isotope (Unstable, Radioactive Parent Isotope turns to a stable Daughter isotope)
If the results of the same experiment are not the same what should the experimenters do? Check procedures and tools for errors.
What is a constant? The thing(s)that STAY the SAME in order to make an investigation fair and valid.
An investigation usually starts with... a question
Igneous rock is sometimes broken-down into sediments, what type of new rock can these sediments form? a sedimentary rock
Given the right conditions, which types of rocks can eventually form into a metamorphic rock? sedimentary and igneous
How are models helpful in science? Models make things that are too large, too small, too dangerous or unaccessible in real life easier to understand
What are models good at doing? Enlarging something that is small, showing how objects affect each other or showing how objects change over time, etc.
Some examples of models include: maps, globes, a diagram of the water cycle, a drawing of parts to machinery, a solar system made of objects, etc.
When rock melts and magma cools, what type of new rock is formed? Igneous
What is empirical evidence? Evidence based on observed and measured phenomena- knowledge gained from actual experience.
What is a Theory? Theories explain WHY something happens- an evidence based explanation.
What is a Law? Laws describe WHAT happens- describes, but does not explain.
In what layer of the Earth do convection currents occur? Convection currents occur in the mantle.
What happens BEFORE sediment is cemented together to form a sedimentary rock? Deposition must occur first.
How could a geologist prove that a large rock is younger than the surrounding rocks? The geologist could compare the amount of radioactive minerals in the large rock and some of the surrounding rocks for proof.
When would it be appropriate to use radiometric dating? Radio metric dating would be appropriate when looking to identify the absolute age of a rock.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
