Elements & Compounds

TermDefinition
Mixture The composition of this type of matter is NOT the same throughout. Matter is blended, not bonded together, and can be separated physically.
Element A pure substance made of only one type of atom. They cannot be divided into simpler substances.
Compound A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together.
Physical Change This type of change in matter alters the appearance but does NOT create a new substance.
Chemical Change This type of change in matter creates a NEW substance with NEW properties.
Periodic Table of Elements An arrangement of elements that are organized based on physical and chemical properties.
Chemical Symbol A short abbreviation used to represent an element on the Periodic Table.
Chemical Formula This abbreviation includes the chemical symbols of each element in the compound and the numbers show how many atoms of each element.
