| Term | Definition |

| Mixture | The composition of this type of matter is NOT the same throughout. Matter is blended, not bonded together, and can be separated physically. |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one type of atom. They cannot be divided into simpler substances. |
| Compound | A pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically bonded together. |
| Physical Change | This type of change in matter alters the appearance but does NOT create a new substance. |
| Chemical Change | This type of change in matter creates a NEW substance with NEW properties. |
| Periodic Table of Elements | An arrangement of elements that are organized based on physical and chemical properties. |
| Chemical Symbol | A short abbreviation used to represent an element on the Periodic Table. |
| Chemical Formula | This abbreviation includes the chemical symbols of each element in the compound and the numbers show how many atoms of each element. |
