sedimentary rock rock formed when particles of other rocks are deposited in layers and are compacted (crushed together) and cemented (binding of the sediments)
fossil the remains of a plant or animal that lived long ago
humus decaying plant and animal material in the soil
soil a material made up of tiny pieces of weathered rock
soil texture the size of soil particles
loam soil rich in nutrients that is good for plant growth
clay material made of very small grains of minerals
silt a solid, dust-like sediment made up of rock and mineral particles that are larger than clay but smaller than sand
compaction occurs when rock particles or sediments are pressed together or packed down by gravity and the pressure of overlying rock layers
cementation occurs when compacted sediments stick together and turn into rock
sedimentary W-E-D; layers; fossils; compaction
