| sedimentary rock | rock formed when particles of other rocks are deposited in layers and are compacted (crushed together) and cemented (binding of the sediments) |
| fossil | the remains of a plant or animal that lived long ago |
| humus | decaying plant and animal material in the soil |
| soil | a material made up of tiny pieces of weathered rock |
| soil texture | the size of soil particles |
| loam | soil rich in nutrients that is good for plant growth |
| clay | material made of very small grains of minerals |
| silt | a solid, dust-like sediment made up of rock and mineral particles that are larger than clay but smaller than sand |
| compaction | occurs when rock particles or sediments are pressed together or packed down by gravity and the pressure of overlying rock layers |
| cementation | occurs when compacted sediments stick together and turn into rock |
| sedimentary | W-E-D; layers; fossils; compaction |
| igneous | cooled lava |
| metamorphic | heat and pressure |
| organsim | living thing |
| meander | take a winding course; wander aimlessly |
| prevent | keep from happening |
| model | smaller copy of something |
