Engineering D. P.

Terms for the steps of the Engineering Design Process

TermDefinition
Define the problem When engineers define the specific problem are they trying to solve
Research Your homework-- to see what you can find out about your area of interest to be tested (i.e. computers, interviews, surveys etc.)
Brainstorm possible solutions Think of all the possible ways you can solve the defined problem
Choose the best solution Select the best idea to solve the problem
Test and Evaluate Try out the prototype you created to figure out what works well and what areas need to be improved for your next try
Criteria Rules or directions that must be followed; requirements that must be met.
Constraints Restrictions that are not allowed during the building of the prototype or final design. OR they can be problems that arise or issues that come up as the build is happening
Prototype A working "first try" version of a created solution. An engineer will tests whether the "first try" is a good solution to the problem they are creating solutions for
Tradeoff Sacrificing one thing to gain another--> give something up to gain something back
Blueprint Sketch or drawing of a possible solution. The materials will be labeled and amounts needed will be given.
Iterate To redesign a prototype until it works to your desired result (could take several attempts)
Engineering Design Process (E.D.P.) A series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a problem.
Communicate the solution Discuss the data and results gained from testing and evaluating the prototypes

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
