Science Q. Review

QuestionAnswer
What happens when a solid, like salt, dissolves? the grains become smaller in size and mix evenly with the liquid
Examples of changes in states of matter - ice melting, water freezing, droplets forming on a cold glass
Properties of a Liquid - indefinite shape (shape can change), definite volume (CANNOT expand)
Properties of a Solid - definite shape and definite volume (shape does not change, volume does not change)
Properties of a Gas - Indefinite shape and indefinite volume (shape CAN change, volume CAN change - it can expand and get bigger)
What is a conductor? a material that ALLOWS heat and electricity to flow through
What is an insulator? a material that STOPS heat and electricity from flowing through
Examples of conductors - ALL metals are conductors (steel, iron, aluminum, gold, copper and more)
Examples of insulators - rubber, glass, cardboard, cloth, paper, cotton
Why does oil float on top of water? because the oil has a different relative density
"Maintain physical properties" means - the ingredients DO NOT change after being mixed, everything looks the same after mixing
"Change physical properties" means - the ingredients CHANGE after being mixed, things do not look the same
What tool is used to separate a mixture with one magnetic ingredient? a magnet
What tool is used to separate a mixture with ingredients that are different sizes? sieve/strainer
What tool is used to separate a mixture of sand and water? filter
What tool is used to separate a solution? hot plate (evaporation)
What happens when water boils? liquid water evaporates, steam rises off the pan, the amount of liquid water decreases
In a density tower(liquids stacked on top of each other), the top layer is - least dense
In a density tower (liquids stacked on top of each other), the bottom layer is - most dense
Mixtures where ingredients CHANGE physical properties water + sugar, water + salt, chocolate powder + milk
Mixtures where ingredients RETAIN (keep) their properties - sugar + sand, iron filings + sand, sand + water, oil + water
Insoluble means - CANNOT dissolve in water
Soluble means - WILL dissolve in water
Examples of Insoluble Materials sand, iron filings, gravel, copper penny, rubber
Examples of Soluble Materials salt, sugar, powdered drink mix, chocolate powder
Basic parts of a circuit - wires, battery, light bulb
Open switch means - light bulb will not light up
Closed switch means - light bulb will light up
Examples of light energy - sunlight, lamps, light bulbs, candles, fires, Christmas lights
Examples of electrical energy - ANYTHING that plugs in or requires batteries
Examples of mechanical energy - movement energy - running, walking, rolling, hopping, bicycle, pencil sharpener, spinning blades in a blender or fan
Examples of thermal energy - heat energy - fires, candles, heater, stove
Examples of sound energy - yelling, laughing, singing, bell ringing, fireworks

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
