Space and Universe part 1 vocab.

TermDefinition
Big Bang Theory states that the Universe was in a very high density state and then expands
Geocentric Theory in the Middle Ages, the earth-centered view of the universe in which scholars believed that the earth was an immovable object located at the center of the universe
Heliocentric Theory the idea that the earth and the other planets revolve around the sun
galaxy A collection of stars, dust, and gas bound together by gravity
Milky Way Galaxy Galaxy that contains our Solar System. The name derives from its appearance as a dim "milky" glowing band arching across the night sky, in which the naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars.
Gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other
universe All of space and everything in it
Planets a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star.
meteor A streak of light in the sky produced by the burning of a meteoroid in Earth's atmosphere.
Asteroids rocky metallic objects that orbit the sun but are too small to be considered planets
comet A ball of frozen dust and rock that orbits the sun and has a tail that glows
