Water Cycle Vocab

6th grade science water cycle/water/phase changes and states of matter

TermDefinition
Matter anything that has mass (weight) and takes up space (volume)
Solid state of matter where something has a defined volume and a defined shape that only changes when force is applied
Liquid state of matter where something has a defined volume but no set shape (takes the shape of the container)
Gas state of matter where something has no defined shape or volume
Evaporation phase change where energy is put into a liquid and it turns into a gas
Condensation phase change where energy is removed from a gas and it turns into a liquid
Boiling phase change process where energy is put into a liquid and it turns to gas
Melting phase change process where energy is added to a solid and it turns into a liquid
Freezing phase change process where energy is removed from a liquid and it turns into a solid
Volume the amount of space something takes up
Mass how heavy something is (weight)
Precipitation water released from clouds (examples: rain, sleet, snow, hail)
Collection precipitated water collects in streams, lakes, oceans, and rivers with most of it soaking into the ground to be stored as groundwater
Conduction transfer of thermal energy from one thing to another by direct contact of the particles/molecules (example: you burn your hand on a hot pan)
Radiation thermal energy that is transferred in waves or rays (example: sunlight)
Convection transfer of thermal energy through a fluid (gas or liquid) caused by the molecules moving in a circular pattern (example: tectonic plate motion)
Thermal energy the total kinetic (moving) energy of EVERY particle in a substance
Sublimation a phase change where a solid becomes a gas without melting into a liquid first
Deposition (phase change) a phase change where a gas becomes solid without condensing into a liquid first
Transpiration when water evaporates from plant's leaves
Runoff water that is not absorbed into the ground that flows over the Earth's surface
Deposition (WED) the laying down of sediment carried by wind, water, or ice
Erosion air or water moving the weathered rocks, soils, and minerals (sediments) to another location
Sediment broken down rocks, minerals, and soil due to weathering
Physical weathering the breaking down of rocks, soils, and minerals through contact with wind or water causing physical/mechanical breaking
Chemical weathering the breaking down of rocks, soils, and minerals through contact with wind or water causing chemical reactions
Temperature the average kinetic (moving) energy of the particles in a substance

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
