Characteristic of Living Things
DNA | genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents |
Stimulus | a Signal to which an organism responds |
Sexual Reproduction | cells from 2 parents unite to form the first cell of the new organism |
Asexual Reproduction | cells from 1 parent produces offspring identical to the parent |
Homeostasis | a relatively constant physical and chemical internal condition that organisms maintain |
Metabolism | chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down material |
Living things grow and develop | Every organism has a particular pattern of growth and development |
Living things are made up of cells | Organisms are composed of one or more cells- the smallest units considered fully alive. Despite their small size cells are complex and highly organized |
Living things reproduce | All organisms reproduce. Most plants and animals engage in sexual reproduction(cells from 2 parents) Others organisms reproduce through asexual reproduction(single organisms produce identical offspring) |
Living things maintain a stable internal environment | All organisms need to keep their internal environment relatively stable, even when external conditions change dramatically. Condition is called Homeostasis |
Living things obtain and use material and energy | All organisms must take in materials and energy to grow, develop, and reproduce. Combination of chemical reactions through which and organism builds up or break down is called Metabolism. |
