Science Unit 1 Test

Ashburn 6th Grade

TermDefinition
cell smallest unit of life - what living things are made of
prokaryote in these cells, the genetic material is not surrounded by a lining, smaller than other cells and have fewer parts to their cells, unicellular organism, live in small groups called colonies
vacuole saclike structures in some cells, these organelles store food, water and waste material.
chloroplast membrane-bound organelle that uses light energy and makes food - a sugar called glucose - from water and carbon dioxide in a process known as photosyntheses
multicellular living things that are made of two or more cells
eukaryote plants, animals, fungi, and organisms are al made of these cells, genetic material that is surrounded by a lining, has other structures called organelles which have specialized functions, usually larger
lysosome some vesicles in an animal cell, contain substances that help break down and recycle cellular components
cytoplasm liquid part of a cell inside the cell membrane; contains salts and other molecules
unicellular living things that are made of only one cell
nucleus part of the eukaryotic cell that directs cell activity and contains genetic information stored in DNA
cell membrane flexible covering that protects the inside of a cell from the environment outside the cell
cell theory (3 parts) all living things are made of one or more cells, the cell is the smallest unit of life, and all new cells come from preexisting cells
ribosome Proteins are made on this small structure
mitochondria bean shaped organelle on top, powers the cell through chemical reactions, found in both plant and animal cells, vital to cellular respiration
cell wall stiff structure outside the cell membrane that protects a cell from attack by viruses and other harmful organisms
endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes can be attached to this web like organelle. it spreads from the nucleus throughtout most of the cytoplasm

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
