A&P Introduction

Directional Terms, Body Planes and Body Cavities

TermDefinition
Anatomy the branch of science that deals with the bodily structures of humans.
Physiology the branch of science that deals with the normal functioning of a human.
Anatomical Postion A standing position with the face directed forward, the arms at the side, and palms of hands facing forward.
Superior Towards the head end of the body, or upper
Inferior Away from the head, or lower
Anterior The front of the body
Ventral The front of the body but relating to the under side of an animal
Posterior The back of the body
Dorsal The back of the body but relating to the upper side of an animal
Medial Near the midline of the body
Lateral Away from the midline of the body
Proximal Near the point of attachment
Distal Away from the point of attachment
Supine Laying on their back
Prone Laying on their stomach
Frontal Plane Divides the body into posterior and anterior portions
Sagittal Plane Divides the body into left and right portions
Transverse Plane Divides the body into superior and inferior portions
Superficial On or close to the surface
Deep Extending far down from the top or surface
Body Cavities Space within the body which contains vital organs
Dorsal Body Cavity Comprised of the cranial & spinal cavities
Ventral Body Cavity Comprised of thoracic & abdominopelvic cavities
Cranial Cavity Contains the brain
Spinal Cavity Contains the spinal cord
Thoracic Cavity Contains the upper half of the body above the diagram
Pleural Cavity Contains the lungs
Pericardial Cavity Contains the heart
Mediastinum Central region that separates the lungs, sits between the sternum and the vertebral column
Abdominopelvic Cavity Comprised of the abdominal and pelvic cavities
Abdominal Cavity Upper part of the abdominopelvic cavity; contains the stomach, small intestines, most of the large intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.
Pelvic Cavity Lower part of the abdominopelvic cavity; contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine
