Cells & Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell wall | rigid structure outside of the plasma membrane; protection and support for plants |
| chromatin | master copy of directions for making proteins |
| nucleolus | located within the nucleus; makes ribsomes |
| ribosomes | site (location) where the cell assembles enzymes and other proteins |
| cytoplasm | clear, gelatinous fluid inside the cell |
| endoplasmic reticulum | the site (location) of chemical reactions in a eukaryotic cell; work area of the cell; transports proteins |
| Golgi apparatus | sorts proteins and packages them into vesicles |
| vacuole | a sac used to store food, enzymes, and other needed materials; may also store waste |
| lysosome | contains digestive enzymes; may digest worn out organelles, food, viruses, and bacteria |
| chloroplast | captures light energy and produces food to store for a later time |
| plastid | plant organelle used for storage |
| chlorophyll | traps light energy; gives leaves and stems their green color |
| mitochondrion | membrane-bound organelle that breaks down in plants and animals that transform energy |
| cytoskeleton | composed of tiny rods and filaments that form a framework for the cell |
| microtubules | thin, hollow cylinders made of proteins; associated with cell shape |
| microfilament | thin, solid protein fibers that aid in the support of the cell |
| cilia | short, hair-like projections used for locomotion; move in a wave-like motion |
| flagella | long, hair-like projections used for locomotion; whip-like motion |
| nucleus | found in eukaryotic cells; contains the cell's genetic information in the form of DNA |
| prokaryote/prokaryotic cell | unicellular organism that lack a nucleus |
| eukaryote/eukaryotic cell | organism whose cell contains a nucleus |
| cell | the basic unit of life |
| cell theory | fundamental concept of biology that states that all living things are composed of cells; that cells are the basic unit of structure nd function in living things; new cells are produced from existiing cells |
| organelle | specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a eukaryotic cell |
| cell membrane | thin, flexible barrier that surrounds all cells; regulates what enters and leaves the cell; also called the plasma membrane and phospholipid bilayer |
| vesicle | a membranous and usually fluid-filled pouch in a plant or animal cell |
