Chapter 1
The scientific method
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Biology | The study of living things |
| Observation | We notice things in the world around us and begin to ask questions |
| Hypothesis | An educated guess based on our observations |
| Experiment | An experiment is carried out to test a hypothesis |
| Collection/Interpretation of Data | Record and analyse |
| Conclusion | Is your hypothesis supported by the experiment |
| Relate results to similar research | Conclusion must be in line with other work |
| Publish your work | -Publish to scientific journals and the internet -Experiment must be repeatable |
| Principle of experimentation 1 | Careful planning and design - test only 1 variable at a time |
| Principle of experimentation 2 | Safety - tie long hair back, wear goggles, have a clear workspace |
| Principle of experimentation 3 | Always use a 'control group' |
| Principle of experimentation 4 | The experiment has to be fair -Large sample size -Random selection -Must be able to be replicated |
| Principle of experimentation 5 | Double blind testing -Both the investigator and the participant are unaware of the nature of the treatment |
| Placebo | A substance that contains no active drug |
| Limitation of scientific method 1 | The extent of our knowledge |
| Limitation of scientific method 2 | The basis of the investigation |
| Limitation of scientific method 3 | Interpreting results |
| iLimitation of scientific method 4 | Accidental discoveries |
| Theory | A hypothesis confirmed by many repeat experiments |
| Principle/Law | Similar to a theory but has been fully tested over many years |
