Mineral Classification

TermDefinition
Nerds not man made: naturally occurring
In inorganic: can't come from something alive, or something that was ever alive
Science shape: has to have definite volume and shape, it can't flow like liquid
Can't crystal structure: particles lineup in a repeated pattern, have to have flat sides, and sharp corners or edges
Dance ???: always contain the same amount of elements
Cleavage the tendency of a mineral that breaks along a flat surface into layers: an even break in a mineral, makes a flat surface
Fracture the tendency of a mineral to break in a way that is not along a flat surface, breaks in rough jagged edges
Streak the color of a mineral's powder
Luster the term that describes how a mineral reflects light from it's surface
Mohs Hardness Scale a scale that ranks ten minerals from softest to hardest
Inorganic not organic
Crystallization the process in which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure
Crystal a solid with flat sides that meet at sharp edges and corners
Mineral a naturally occuring, inorganic solid with a definite structure and composition
Inorganic are not alive, were ever alive, and are not made by life processes
Solid has definite volume and shape
Friedrich Mohs a German scientist who developed the Mohs scale of hardness. (lists hardness of ten minerals, one being the softest, ten being the hardest)
Luster (continued) physical property of a mineral that describes how light is reflected from its surface. Is defined as metallic or non-metallic
Metallic always shines like metal
Non-Metallic doesn't shine like metal
Color is not enough alone to classify a mineral
Streak (continued) color of a mineral when it is powdered, observed by rubbing the mineral on a streak plate
Hardness a measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched
Talc is the softest mineral and can be scratched with your fingernail
Diamond is the hardest mineral and can only be scratched with another diamond
Mica has perfect cleavage
Quartz has fracture
Calcite fizzes when hydrochloric acid is put on it. causes you to see a double image
Density the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance mass divided by volume
Color (continued) the appearance of a mineral that can vary according to the impurities in that mineral as well as other factors

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
