Water Cycle Voc
Vocabulary- definitions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| spring | The result of an aquifer being filled to the point that the water overflows onto the land surface. |
| surface runoff | Water, from rain, snow melt or other sources, that flows over the land surface, and is a major component of the water cycle. Runoff that occurs on surfaces before reaching a channel is also called overland flow. Runoff to a common point is watershed. |
| sun | Drives the entire water cycle & is responsible for its 2 major components:condensation & evaporation. When sun heats the surface of water it evaporates & ends up in the atmosphere as water vapor. It cools & rises becoming clouds eventually to H2O droplets |
| water resources | Natural "RESOURCES" of "WATER" that are potentially useful |
| permeability | Is closely related to porosity. PERMEABILITY refers to how connected pore spaces are to one another |
| natural resources | Materials or substances such as minerals, forest, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and be used for economic gain. |
| ocean | A body of water that composes much of the planet's hydrosphere. |
| percolation | Water travels downwards through the tiny spaces between rocks & soil particles. The H2O eventually saturates the underlying rock like water filling holes of a sponge. This helps replenish aquifers under the ground. |
| purified water | Water that has been filtered or processed to remove impurities like chemicals and other contaminants. |
| radiation | A method of heat transfer that does not rely upon any contact between the heat source and the heated object. |
| porosity | The amount of empty space within a given material. In a solid or rock the empty space exist between the grains of minerals. |
| runoff | Precipitation that did not get absorbed or infiltrated into the soil, or did not evaporate & made its way from the ground surface into places that water collects. |
| conduction | The process by which heat energy is transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or molecules. |
| convection | Is the heat transfer due to the bulk movement of molecules within fluids such as gases and liquids, including molten rock. |
| crystallization | Water that comes from a crystal substance after heat is applied. Example: Water that drips off a water crystal hanging from the eaves of a house as it warms up after a freezing rain/snow. |
| energy transfer | The movement of energy from one place to another. |
| freshwater | Water containing <1000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, most often salt. |
| gravity | The force of attraction between 2 objects & Earth's gravity pulls matter downward toward its center. It pulls precipitation down from clouds and pulls water downhill. |
| groundwater | Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock. |
| glaciers | A slowly moving mass of river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction pf snow on mountains near the poles. |
