| Chronic illness | an illness that is long lasting or recurring and usually interferes with a person's ability to perform activities of daily living. |
| Developmental Stage | an age-defined period with specific psychological tasks that need to be accomplished to maintain ego as proposed by Erik Erikson. |
| Health | a condition in which all functions of the body and mind are normally active. |
| Hopelessness | subjective state in which a person sees limited or unavailable alternatives; lacking energy. |
| Illness | the state of being sick. |
| Powerlessness | perceived lack of control over a situation. |
| Reminiscence therapy | use of life reflection with a therapist to resolve conflicts or bring closure to life events. |
| Respite Care | short-term, intermittent care for the chronically ill; provides rest for family members or caregivers from the stress of sustained care giving. |
| Spirituality | sense of connectedness with all of life and the universe. |
