Ch. 5 Complementary and Alternative Modalities

| Acupuncture | treatment in which practitioners insert one or more needles along the meridians (pathways) where qi flow |
| Allopathic | method of treating disease with remedies that produce effects different from those caused by the disease. |
| Alternative modality | refers to a therapy used instead of a conventional modality. |
| Ayurvedic | knowledge or science. (maintains that illness is the result of falling out of balance with nature. |
| Chiropractic | treatment modality that uses manual adjustment of the vertebral column and extremities to remove interference with nerve function. |
| Complementary Modality | refers to a therapy used in addition to a conventional modality. |
| Homeopathy | "like cures like" meaning that tiny doses of a substance that create the symptoms of disease in a health person will relieve those symptoms in a sick person. |
| Naturopathy | uses natural therapies such as nutrition, herbs, hydrotherapy (water based therapy) counseling, physical medicine, and homeopathy to treat disease, promote healing, and prevent illness. |
| Osteopathic | related to the system of medicine emphasizing the interrelationship of the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs; treating the whole person thru diet, exercise etc. |
