Term | Definition |

Precipitation | When water falls from clouds. Usually in the form of rain or snow |
Surface runoff | When water flows along the ground after a heavy rainfall |
Porosity | A measure of the empty space in a material. A sponge and Swiss cheese is very porous |
Permeability | A measure of how much water can get through a material. Porous materials have high permeability. |
Infiltration | When rainwater seeps into the ground |
Evaporation | When a liquid turns into a gas BELOW the boiling point |
Surface water | Water that is located on the Earth's surface (lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds) |
Groundwater | Water that is located below the Earth's surface |
Saturated | Something that is thoroughly soaked with water |
Unsaturated | Something that could still hold more water |
