| Term | Definition |

| Precipitation | When water falls from clouds. Usually in the form of rain or snow |
| Surface runoff | When water flows along the ground after a heavy rainfall |
| Porosity | A measure of the empty space in a material. A sponge and Swiss cheese is very porous |
| Permeability | A measure of how much water can get through a material. Porous materials have high permeability. |
| Infiltration | When rainwater seeps into the ground |
| Evaporation | When a liquid turns into a gas BELOW the boiling point |
| Surface water | Water that is located on the Earth's surface (lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds) |
| Groundwater | Water that is located below the Earth's surface |
| Saturated | Something that is thoroughly soaked with water |
| Unsaturated | Something that could still hold more water |
