QuestionAnswer
Hippocampus Long-term memory and spatial navigation. Location: inside the temporal lobes.
Amygdala Performs a primary role in the processing and memory of emotional reactions. Location: deep within the medial temporal lobes.
Basal Ganglia Associated with a variety of functions, including motor control and learning.
Nociceptors Pain receptors.
Thalamus Relays sensation, special sense and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, along with the regulation of consciousness, sleep and alertness.
Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) A clear fluid that occupies the space around and inside the brain and spinal column. In essence, the brain and spinal cord "floats" in it.
Dura Mater The outermost layer of the fiberous tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The dura surrounds the brain and the spinal cord and is responsible for keeping in the cerebrospinal fluid. ('Dura Mater'is latin for 'hard mother')
Glial Cells Provide support and protection for neurons. They are thus known as the "glue" of the nervous system
sulcus (plural - sulci) A depression or fissure in the surface of the brain.
gyrus (plural - gyri) A ridge on the cerebral cortex. (the 'worms-like' ridges seen on the outside of the brain)
White matter One of the two components of the central nervous system and consists mostly of myelinated axons.
Gray matter Part of the brain that consists mostly of neuronal cell bodies, dendrites and both unmyelinated axons and myelinated axons
Wernicke's Area One of the two parts of the cerebral cortex linked to speech (the other is the Broca's area). It is involved in the understanding of written and spoken language
Broca's Area A region of the brain with functions linked to speech production
Sensory Cortex The part of the cortex responsible for sensory processes. (sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing)
Prefrontal Cortex A region has been implicated in planning complex cognitive behaviors, personality expression, decision making and moderating correct social behavior
Motor Cortex Part of the brain involved in the planning, control, and execution of voluntary motor functions.
Cerebral Cortex The outermost layer of the cerebrum It plays a key role in memory, attention, perceptual awareness, thought, language, and consciousness.
Medulla Oblongata The lower half of the brainstem. Contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor centers and deals with autonomic functions, such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.
Dendrite Branched part of nerve cell that conduct the electrochemical stimulation received from other neural cells to the cell body

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
