taxonomy the system of classifying different living things
Carolus Linnaeus Created the modern system of classification
taxon One of the units in the hierarchy of taxonomy
kingdom The second highest level of classification; there are 5 of these large divisions
phylum smaller than a kingdom; there are 9 major ones
class A unit of division that contains various orders
order more specific rank than class; contains more than one similar families
family includes various genus'
genus a group of similar species
species the lowest and least inclusive level of taxonomic hierarchy
binomial nomenclature a two-part naming system
Porifera Name means "pore bearer" Have specialized cells but no tissues, asymmetry. Ex: sponges
Cnidaria Have radial symmetry, true tissues, includes jellyfish, sea anemones
Platyhelminthes Name means "flat" . Cephalization, bilateral symmetry, mesoderm, complete digestive system. Ex: flatworms, tapeworms, flukes
Nematoda Has pseudocoelom, complete digestive system. Ex: roundworm
Mollusca Name means "soft body:, includes squids, snails, and clams
Annelida Has a segmented body, primitive brain. Includes earthworms & leeches
Chordates Have spinal cord, includes mammals, reptiles, and birds
Arthropods Name means "jointed legs", includes all insects, spiders, crustaceans
Echinodermata Name means "spiny skinned"-Complete digestive system, coelom, Includes sea stars, sand dollars, sea cucumbers
